The equipment you choose makes or breaks your experience in Torchlight. Orange items are very rare, and almost always useful. Blue equipment is rare and enchanted, and often better than green. Green equipment is enchanted and almost always better than ordinary equipment of the same level. You should replace ordinary equipment ASAP. Plain-Jane-equipment appears with white text and a blank background. Higher numbers are better, but don’t discount small percentage increases. Hovering over each piece reveals a lot about it: how much damage it does, what kind of damage, and any special powers or bonuses it grants. There are thousands of possible randomly-generated weapons, pieces of armor, and trinkets. Do yourself a favor and remember the keyboard hotkey “I” for this.įallen monsters, looted chests, and smashed urns all have a chance of dropping a dizzying array of equipment. On the right edge of the screen is a small tab that brings up your Inventory. You’ll want a good safety buffer on life. The magical weapons and attacks these guys wield can knock your Health down quickly, and potions take a few sections to begin working. If you see a Champion on the horizon, (a purple-hued enemy), make sure your Health is at least 2/3, (3/4 on higher difficulties) and have your finger over the Potion hotkey. Early in the game these scrolls are proportionally expensive, but before long your hoard of Gold will grow until they represent a mere pittance. Use one before stepping into dangerous areas. You can stock up on whatever supplies you need and then head back into the very point that you left the Dungeon. What's a Portal Scroll, you ask? It's a handy item that allows you to create an instant bolt-hole back to town. If it gets low, drink a potion! And remember that potions take a short time to go into effect, so don’t wait until you are bottomed-out to drink! More on this in the next section. You shouldn’t go a second in a battle without glancing down at it. When your charge is full, attacks become more powerful and you are awarded buffs to attack speed, movement, etc. It is built up during combat by using your various skills. The Charge bar is the golden meter just above your keyboard map. You'll miss a lot of good loot drops if you turn it off. The green magnifying glass icon on the left side of the bar toggles object identification on the main map. You can rig all kinds of special abilities and magic Spells to these slots once you learn them. If you strike the number 1 on your keyboard, you’ll drink a Health Potion. You’ll see that numbers 1 and 2 are pre-mapped to Health and Mana Potions. Note that these numbers correspond to the numbers on the top of your keyboard. Between these are a series of numbered squares. On the left side is a big red orb representing your Health, on the right side another bar representing your Mana (magical energy). The bottom of the screen is dominated by your status bar. Stars show the way to quest goals and waypoints. Indicators on the edges of the map tell you which way to go. As you advance, the map unfolds, revealing every area you’ve explored. On the top right corner of your display is a mini-map. Early in the game, it’s important to pick one tree and stick with it, so spend some time browsing the trees for your character.ģ. Each class has three different Skill trees you can improve every time you level up. You will also have a number of Skill points to allocate to abilities. There are complete guides to skills and builds for each of these elsewhere on the Guide, but if you’re in a hurry here’s a quick character creation walkthrough: Outlander, Embermage, Berserker, and Engineer. No second chances, no restarts from saves. Hardcore characters stay dead when they fall. The Normal setting is pretty forgiving, while the Hard setting presents a decent challenge.ĭon't select Hardcore mode unless you're a Torchlight expert. Casual is a cakewalk, but not a bad way to familiarize yourself with the controls and main themes of the game.
